Xeriscaping: Low Water Landscaping

One of the most interesting aspect of life in the desert is landscaping. In areas like the east coast or plains plentiful rain means it's easy to maintain lots of grass and tall mature trees. Out here though, yards look different.

There are some, don't get us wrong, that have grass and mature cottonwood trees. However, many homeowners are now choosing a low maintenance, low-water form of landscaping called xeriscaping.

If this picture is what you imagine when you hear "low water landscaping" you're not necessarily wrong!

what does xeriscape mean

However, xeriscaping doesn't mean just dirt and cacti. You can even have grass as part of your xeriscaped yard. What it means, more than anything, is low water landscaping using plants native to your area, and using a sprinkler system to help control water usage. By grouping plants near sprinkler heads you can direct water right to the roots of your plants. This means the water doesn't evaporate into the dry desert air.

There are so many ways to add color and vibrancy when designging low water landscaping.

In the above photo you can see not just varities of grasses, but flowering plants and beautifully colored bushes. All of these are low water plants (once established) and even better, they're low maintenance!

Here Russian Sage provides a lavender color and smell for this xeriscaped garden. It's still lush, but the upkeep is minimal because of the use of weed barriers and easy-to-prune flowering bushes.
