Five Reasons To Love Grand Junction In The Summer

Summer in the high desert can seem rough. There's always talk of a drought and conversations will often turn to the familiar phrase of, "We could sure use rain!" All of that is true. Still, there are plenty of reasons to love Grand Junction and the Western Slope in the summer.

First, for a desert we have lots of ways to stay cool on the water! Try paddleboarding or tubing down the Colorado River, right through town.  Consider a longer overnight trip, taking out at Westwater in Utah, for more of an adventure. Head out to Highline Lake (it fills up fast on the weekends) for boating or over to the Imondi Wakeboard park between Grand Junction and Fruita for a fun day. Finally, there's always the Lincoln Park pool for a quick, cooling dip!

Next, visit a farmer's market! They all start up in June and you'll find lots of great local produce like apricots and cherries early on and peaches and sweet corn later in the season. These are local delicacies for us! Plus, you won't want to miss the smells of roasting green chiles that are available in the summer too.

Also, even when the summer days are super hot, the mornings are still cool enough for early day hikes, bike rides, and gardening. You'll be able to get out and get a great workout in or just spend some time in the backyard without sweltering! Even when it is hot, it's usually that "dry heat" you so often hear about.  With very low humidity our high temps don't seem quite so bad!

Summer concerts are in full swing in the summer, and this year is no different. You'll find concerts in Fruita, Palisade, and at Las Colonias Ampitheater.  What better way to enjoy summer than with live music under the stars?

Finally, when it just seems too hot in the desert, you can head up to the Grand Mesa where, even this time of year, you can find snow and cold running streams. Enjoy a hike on the Crag's Crest trail or fishing on one of the hundreds of lakes available. Just make sure to take your bug repellant as the mosquitos can be fierce!
